The 19th Amendment

I would ask my daughters, what’s the most important Amendment to the Consitution? They would answer: the 19th Amendment–giving women the Right to VOTE.

Have we told the story of Women’s Rights to our daughters?

From 1776 when Abigail Adams told her husband John, "Don’t forget the ladies." He made a joke.

To 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, NY, attended by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

To 1866, when Susan B. Anthony and Eliz. Cady Stanton form the American Equal Rights Assn.
To 1913, when Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, as members of the Woman’s Party, participate in hunger strikes, picket the White House, and engage in other forms of civil disobedience to publicize the suffrage cause.

And finally 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment is ratified. Women now have the Constitutional right to vote!

The League of Women Voters was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920 during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The convention was held just six months before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote after a 72-year struggle.
